Here Comes the Penguins!

Can penguins actually fly? Well heck yes!
Die-hard fans of the DreamWorks animated film, Madagascar will definitely be shocked to see their favourites penguins, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private ‘flying’ into cinemas, hitting straight into the hearts of viewers with their cuteness. With Madagascar sequels spunning great success, a film about the comedic quartet penguins have been long awaited by many cinema-goers.

It was surprising for DreamWorks to start a spin-off on these penguins who were mainly primary characters and show stealers. Moreover, they have the least development and existed as a part of Madagascar’s comedy with their outrageous break-out attempts and plans.

But yet, they have managed to be a hit among fans, being impactful enough to squeeze out some funds from Dreamworks to start a movie about them.

Before Penguins of Madagascar was premiered, there was a foul cry among fans who rather disagree that DreamWorks are spending their money on these penguins. Their reason? They are just cute cuddly animals with ambitious plans. But they were wrong. Penguins of Madagascar raked a revenue of $373 million on a $132

The film began with a bang, serving us a heart-stopping story of the little Skipper, Kowalski and Rico with their witty dialogues. The three eventually tried to save a rolling penguin egg and ended up breaking the egg, hence introducing their final member, Private to the world. From just the beginning of the film, you can’t stop laughing at these penguins. For example, when Skipper, Kowalski and Rico were rushing to catch the egg, they were actually filmed by a group of documentary crews. The reporter’s dramatic telling of their story made the scene much more hilarious.

The usage of clever word plays in the film was certainly amusing. For example, when the villain, Dr. Octavius Brine (a calcium deficient human with a gigantic head and extremely skinny legs) ordered his minions (whom are also octupuses), he called them using famous celebrity names such as Drew, Moore and Nicholas. (If you still don’t get it, they are DrewBarrymore, Mandy Moore and Nicholas Cage)

Like many of the animated movies, Penguins of Madagascar is full of moral values which made it suitable for children-viewing. It mainly highlights on the love between siblings which in the penguins’ case, as brothers. In order to save all the penguins in the world, Private was willing to sacrifice himself to ensure his brothers and the other penguins safety. He ended up becoming a mutant like penguin, losing his cuteness. However, that did not deterred Skipper, Kowalski and Rico’s love for him. They loved him not because of his cuteness but because of who he was.

However, I must say the plot and the supporting characters were rather cliché. The film’s plot is basically about the penguins getting caught by a human who is actually an octopus named Dave who is revealed to hate penguins due to their fame. Hence, he forcefully injected a serum into these penguins, turning them ugly.

Sounds familiar?

Yup, it has a similar plot to Despicable Me 2where El Macho (the villain) hated the minions so much that he turned them into ugly looking purple beings.

Another thing which I find lacking is the character, agent Classified. Though its voice actor is no other than the great, talented actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Classified was rather a boring character with its typical profile as
If you are seeking for just something cute to laugh at , Penguins of Madagascar is an OK choice. You will never fall asleep due to their witty jokes which are sometimes racy (the children won’t know anyway, so it’s safe right?).

However, if you are seeking for an animated film with awesome plot, I am sorry but Penguins of Madagascar isn’t the right one.

Though the only inspiring thing I learned from the movie was what Kowalski said to Private. “Looks does not matter. It was what we did matter.” That’s a really useful quote for our daily lives. The butt slapping dance was pure gold. I am surprised why isn’t it a hit among our society yet but anyway, do not let your kids do them in public!
