After watching Finding Dory, I assure you that you will never feel the same again after enjoying a fish-based meal. I’d recommend you to gobble up your sashimi or Filet O’ Fish before continuing reading this review.
Done with your meal? Perfect.
In 2003, Disney and Pixar produced one of the best-animated films of all time, Finding Nemo, which focuses on a clownfish named Nemo. Fast forward 13 years later, we have Finding Dory, a sequel to Finding Nemo. This time, it revolves around Dory, the kind and cheerful blue tang fish who suffers from short-term memory loss.

The story continues after the Finding Nemo, where Dory finds herself experiencing a flashback of her memories with her parents. She has never experienced those remembering those memories before due to her disease. Hence, she decides to find her way back to her long-lost parents based on those vague memories. Of course, she can’t just do it alone. There’s Nemo and Marlin at her assistance, though Marlin is quite reluctant.
After 13 long years of anticipation, it is rather hilarious and odd to have grown-up adults flocking to the cinemas and fighting with kids to get the front-row seats. Even in the social media, tons of posts about these adult fans posting about Finding Dory which help them in reminiscing of their childhood.

Finding Dory is indeed a beautiful film with its detailed animations and arts of the multi-hued underwater creatures and plant life. Those bright, vibrant colors are not only eye-catching but also creates a cheerful atmosphere throughout the film’s screening. The aquatic image will definitely leave you spellbound, especially if you watching it in 3D.
Sometimes, the gorgeous art gave me the creeps too. Those kelp forests which bend and lean in the current with ghost-like bioluminescent giant squid appearing out of nowhere from the dark ocean, my, they were beautiful yet eerie.
In many animated movies, we find ourselves sympathizing with the characters who are forced to face hardships. That’s a pretty cliché way to attract the audience’s attention. However, instead of gaining out sympathies, Finding Dory focuses on motivating the audience to overcome your fear together with Dory. As I watched the film, I could feel myself in Dory’s shoes, as if I was viewing the whole thing from her perspective and I was really into the whole Dory going against all odds despite her disabilities.

Ellen DeGeneres’s bubbly and child-like glee are the main focus of the show. With her voice, she is able to bring Dory to life. Moreover, with DeGeneres’s goofy persona, her voice is indeed a perfect fit for Dory and it has uplifted the cute blue tang fish.
The grouchy octopus, Hank is also an awesome character. Being a newcomer to the film, it is kind of difficult for the character to avoid from being overshadowed by the series’ original characters, Dory, Nemo, and Marlin. However, with the portrayal of Hank being the total opposite of Dory, it makes the film to have a build-up of conflicts. Besides, I was really entertained by Hank’s ninja-like antics where he camouflages himself from humans, drives a truck and even drinks coffee! Hank is definitely one of the major players to keep the film rolling as his realistic and pessimistic point of view of life which contradicts to Dory’s overly positive persona is able to keep audience back on track. Without him, the film will be too flat and unrealistic as there isn’t a character who actually questions on Dory’s actions.

The creators have indeed done a great job with Finding Dory, venturing from a different perspective in storytelling. It basically gives us a perspective of those disabled or who are not understood by the society or even those who just simply doesn’t fit the cut. Dory’s determination teaches us to live on and strives despite with our conditions. Have faith in yourself and let faith paves it way.
