Big Hero 6 is one of the most anticipated Disney movies in 2014. Unlike many of Disney’s movies, Big Hero 6 is not a story about a prince, princesses, and magical creatures. It features robots and science. Yes, it is one of Disney’s most logical movies of all time.
Based on a comic book series of the same name released by Marvel, it is surprisingly an odd choice for Disney to make a movie of this unknown comic book series. Before Big Hero 6 movie is released, not many people has heard of the series, not even those avid comic readers. Well, in comparison with those big hits like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor comics, Big Hero 6 is definitely not made from the same cut.
There are no six pack heroes, no rich billionaire adults nor even guns. Yup, Big Hero 6 revolves around a group of university students and a genius kid in a fictional city of San Fransokyo (San Francisco and Tokyo). There aren’t any magical beings or Thunder gods or Kryptonite, just pure science. No violent scenes at all.

Perhaps those are the reason why even Marvel themselves have shunned the comic book series. Big Hero 6 is just too dull and unattractive for adult comic readers. Which is why Disney chose to adapt the series. Their main customers are of course kids and what else fits the eyes of the kids that an innocent story of a group of simple superheroes based on science?
I was definitely skeptical over Disney’s decision to make a movie out of Big Hero 6. The original Big Hero 6, the comic book is actually a combination of Japanese manga and old school style. Can Disney bring in Japanese anime into their movies?
Every successful Disney’s movies share the same concept-having cute cuddly characters. These cute characters will then be made into soft toys, featuring in many fast food chains and becoming an attraction in theme parks. Hence, maximizing the amount of cash into Disney’s account.
Bam! We have Baymax, the chubby whitish
ballon-like robot with a horrible sense of humour. Indeed, the design of
the character made it be such a child-friendly figure and Baymax became
the icon of the movie. Without Baymax, I am pretty sure the movie won’t
be able to attract kids with the not-so-cute characters such as Gogo,
Hiro, and Wasabi. I am not saying that they don’t look good, well they
do but remember, this is a kids movie and what is more important than pleasing the kids?
On the other hand, Big Hero 6’s dashing Tadashi (who unfortunately perished too early in the movie) became the bait to lure many female fans. Just like Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians, Tadashi became a hot item among the female audience and paved the way for Disney to suck up all the cash from these females.

Big Hero 6’s design is simply gorgeous. The idea of incorporating two cities, San Francisco and Tokyo is indeed creative. We get to see many iconic sculptures from both cities mashed into one creating a whole new captivating scenery. Hence we have Golden Gate Bridge with a Japanese temple on the top and noodle stands in between western looking houses. The art was pretty detailed and I did enjoy watching the scenes which highlight the city (when Hiro took Baymax for a ride in the air).

The plot was great in the beginning. Just the beginning. We are shown with the many wonders of science (Tadashi’s Baymax, Hiro’s microbots, Gogo’s super fast discs) and I can’t help but be in awe. But as soon as Tadashi died, the plot became a rather cliché one, with the classic hero going against the villain. The science stopped there and we are introduced to the dramas.
Characters wise, the brothers, Hiro and Tadashi are a reflection of Anna and Elsa from Disney’s big hit, Frozen. The two are simply inseparable, their bonds are so strong that losing one of them was enough to bring a big impact on the brothers. It was nice watching the great love between the two brothers.

The other heroes, Gogo, Honey Lemon, Wasabi, and Fred were okay. In my opinion, they share the same fast as Callaghan, little development and becoming rather shallow characters. There weren’t much information about them and we are just told to accept them as they are. It was rather disappointing become the title actually says 6, 6 heroes.
In short, Big Hero 6 would have been a poorly made movie without Baymax inside. The graphics are up to expectations and the soundtrack is decent. Other than the movie’s cliché plots and little character development (besides Hiro), Big Hero 6 is a perfect movie to feast on a different side of Disney’s classic movies.
